SUMMARY:Hari Raya Haji
DESCRIPTION:Hari Raya Haji\n Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى‎\, romanized: ʿīd al-ʾaḍḥā\, lit. ‘Feast of the Sacrifice’\, IPA: [ʕiːd alˈʔadˤħaː]) is the latter of the two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year (the other being Eid al-Fitr)\, and considered the holier of the two. Also called Tabaski\, it honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to God’s command. (The Jewish and Christian religions believe that according to Genesis 22:2\, Abraham took his son Isaac to sacrifice.) Before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son\, however\, Allah provided a lamb to sacrifice instead. In commemoration of this intervention\, an animal (usually a sheep) is sacrificed ritually. One third of its meat is consumed by the family offering the sacrifice\, while the rest is distributed to the poor and needy. Sweets and gifts are given\, and extended family are typically visited and welcomed.[5] \nIn the Islamic lunar calendar\, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah\, and lasts for four days. In the international (Gregorian) calendar\, the dates vary from year to year\, shifting approximately 11 days earlier each year. \nSource by Wikipedia

SUMMARY:Hari Gawai
DESCRIPTION:Gawai Dayak Day (Jawi script: ݢاواي دايق) is an annual festival celebrated by Dayaks in Sarawak\, Malaysia and West Kalimantan\, Indonesia on May 31 and June 1. The festival is a public holiday in Sarawak and a religious and social event recognized since 1957. Hari Gawai Dayak is a concept brought to you by radio producers Tan Kingsley and Owen Liang from the Dayak community. The British colonial government refused to recognize Dayak Day until 1962. They simply called it Sarawak Day by involving all Sarawakians as national day\, regardless of ethnic origin. On June 1\, 1963\, Datuk Michael Buma\, a native of Betong\, organized the first Gawai Dayak Day celebration at his house in Siol Kandis\, Kuching. [1] On 25 September 1964\, Sarawak Day was gazetted as a public holiday to announce the formation of the Federation of Malaysia. This public holiday was first celebrated on June 1\, 1965 and became a symbol of the unity\, aspirations and hopes of the Dayak community. The festival is celebrated as a day of thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest and time to plan a new planting season. \nSource by Wikipedia \nLocation : Sarawak

SUMMARY:Melaka Historical City Day
DESCRIPTION:Malacca is a hotchpotch of Malay\, Chinese\, Indian\, European and sundry influences. Malaysians laud Malacca’s laidback atmosphere and lost-in-time feel; stores close early here\, traffic goes by at leisurely pace and city life is a languid affair. Between the scattered historic spots are atmospheric Chinese shop fronts and traditional Malay kampongs. Though the state may not boast a white-sand shoreline reminiscent of its East Coast cousins\, Malacca is noteworthy for its heritage hotspots. \n  \nWhen the sun goes down\, one of the city’s most popular destinations is the Friday and Saturday Jonker Walk Night Market which plays host to a collection of stalls that sell everything but the kitchen sink. Here you can purchase a variety of trinkets and even sample some of the state’s best-known local fare including fried egg ice cream and fried radish cake. At night the handful of bars along the boulevard become a mini street party with tables oozing beyond the sidewalks and a mix of live music beating throughout the area. \nSource by Hotel.com \nLocation :  Gereja Christ\, Jalan Gereja\, Bandar Hilir\, 75000 Malacca

SUMMARY:Qingming Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Qingming festival\, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day in English (sometimes also called Chinese Memorial Day or Ancestors’ Day)\,[2][3] is a traditional Chinese festival observed by the Han Chinese of mainland China\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Macau\, Malaysia\, Singapore\, Indonesia\, Thailand and by the Chitty of Malaysia and Singapore. It falls on the first day of the fifth solar term of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. This makes it the 15th day after the Spring Equinox\, either 4\, 5 or 6 April in a given year.[4][5][6] During Qingming\, Chinese families visit the tombs of their ancestors to clean the gravesites\, pray to their ancestors and make ritual offerings. Offerings would typically include traditional food dishes and the burning of joss sticks and joss paper. The holiday recognizes the traditional reverence of one’s ancestors in Chinese culture. \nThe Qingming Festival has been observed by the Chinese for over 2500 years. It became a public holiday in mainland China in 2008. In Taiwan\, the public holiday was in the past observed on 5 April to honor the death of Chiang Kai-shek on that day in 1975\, but with Chiang’s popularity waning\, this convention is not being observed. A similar holiday is observed in the Ryukyu Islands\, called Shīmī in the local language. \nIn mainland China\, the holiday is associated with the consumption of qingtuan\, green dumplings made of glutinous rice and Chinese mugwort or barley grass. A similar confection called caozaiguo or shuchuguo\, made with Jersey cudweed\, is consumed in Taiwan. \nSource by Wikipedia

SUMMARY:Ramadan Bazaar
DESCRIPTION:For a whole month\, those observing fasting during Ramadan abstain from food or drink during the day till dusk. To punctuate their breaking fast\, Ramadan bazaars in various areas in Penang pop-up from around 4.30pm till around 7.30pm and they offer a large array of desserts\, savoury food and non-alcoholic drinks for take away. They are basically a one-stop place for anyone interested to sample Penang’s halal street food. The larger bazaars with the most varieties are the ones at Seberang Perai on Penang’s mainland. \nThe array of dishes available at these bazaars for take-away may make your head spin. While it’s always fun to try a little bit of everything\, moderation is key during Ramadhan. To keep greed at bay\, here are a few recommendations of authentic local dishes to make food shopping at these bazaars a pleasurable (and quick) chore. \nSource by myPenang

SUMMARY:Penang's Thai New Year Songkran Water Festival
DESCRIPTION:Songkran\, also known as the Thai Water Festival\, is a traditional Thai Festival to mark the New Year. Is also celebrated in Penang\, notably along Lorong Burma in Pulau Tikus\, where both the Thai Reclining Buddha temple and the Burmese Temple celebrate with gusto. The now almost-destroyed historic hamlet of Kampong Siam (Thai Village) is nearby; this was once the heart of the Thai and Burmese  communities of Penang.  Both temples are worth visiting at any time\, the Thai one for its long reclining Buddha\, and the Burmese one for its intricate gilding and lattice work. Normally oases of calm lying between two busy roads\, Songkran brings an entirely different atmosphere\, one of noise\, gaiety and playfulness. \nSource By Penang Free Street \nLocation :  24\, Jalan Burma\, Pulau Tikus\, 10250 George Town\, Pulau Pinang

SUMMARY:Good Friday
DESCRIPTION:Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary. It is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday\, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Holy Friday\, Great Friday\, and Black Friday.[2][3][4] \nMembers of many Christian denominations\, including the Catholic\, Eastern Orthodox\, Lutheran\, Anglican\, Methodist\, Oriental Orthodox and Reformed traditions\, observe Good Friday with fasting and church services.[5][6][7] Communicants of the Moravian Church have a Good Friday tradition of cleaning gravestones in Moravian cemeteries.[8] \nThe date of Good Friday varies from one year to the next on both the Gregorian and Julian calendars. Eastern and Western Christianity disagree over the computation of the date of Easter and therefore of Good Friday. Good Friday is a widely instituted legal holiday around the world\, including in most Western countries and 12 U.S. states.[9] Some countries\, such as Germany\, have laws prohibiting certain acts\, such as dancing and horse racing\, that are seen as profaning the solemn nature of the day.[10][11] \nSource by Wikipedia \nLocation : Kuching\, Sarawak

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day
DESCRIPTION:Valentine’s Day\, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine\,[1] is celebrated annually on February 14. It originated as a Western Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and is recognized as a significant cultural\, religious\, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world. \nThere are a number of martyrdom stories associated with various Valentines connected to February 14\,[2] including an account of the imprisonment of Saint Valentine of Rome for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century.[3][4] According to an early tradition\, Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer.[5] Numerous later additions to the legend have better related it to the theme of love: an 18th-century embellishment to the legend claims he wrote the jailer’s daughter a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell before his execution;[6] another addition posits that Saint Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry.[4] \nThe Feast of Saint Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14 in honour of Saint Valentine of Rome\, who died on that date in AD 269.[7][8] The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries when notions of courtly love flourished\, apparently by association with the “lovebirds” of early spring. In 18th-century England\, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers\, offering confectionery\, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline\, doves\, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century\, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.[9] In Italy\, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart”\, as well as to children to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine’s Malady).[10] \nSaint Valentine’s Day is not a public holiday in any country\, although it is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion[11] and the Lutheran Church.[12] Many parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day on July 6 in honor of Roman presbyter Saint Valentine\, and on July 30 in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine\, the Bishop of Interamna (modern Terni).[13] \nSource by Wikipedia

SUMMARY:Chinese New Year
DESCRIPTION:Chinese New Year\nLunar New Year (traditional Chinese: 農曆新年\, 中國新年; simplified Chinese: 农历新年\, 中国新年; pinyin: nónglì xīn nián\, zhōngguó xīn nián) is the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunar calendar. In Chinese culture and East Asian countries\, the festival is commonly referred to as the Spring Festival (traditional Chinese: 春節; simplified Chinese: 春节; pinyin: Chūn Jié) as the spring season in the lunisolar calendar traditionally starts with lichun\, the first of the twenty-four solar terms which the festival celebrates around the time of.[2] Marking the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season\, observances traditionally take place from New Year’s Eve\, the evening preceding the first day of the year to the Lantern Festival\, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Lunar New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February.[3] In 2021\, the first day of the Lunar New Year will be on Friday\, 12 February\, which is the Year of the Ox. \nLunar New Year is one of the most important holidays in China\, and has strongly influenced Lunar New Year celebrations such as the Losar of Tibet (Tibetan: ལོ་གསར་) and of China’s neighbouring cultures\, including the Korean New Year (Korean: 설\, seol)\, and the Tết of Vietnam.[4] It is also celebrated worldwide in regions and countries with significant Overseas Chinese or Sinophone populations\, including Singapore\,[5] Indonesia\, Malaysia\, Myanmar\,[6] Thailand\, Cambodia\, the Philippines\,[7] and Mauritius\,[8] as well as many in North America and Europe.[9][10][11] \nLunar New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honour deities as well as ancestors.[12] Within China\, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely\,[13] and the evening preceding Lunar New Year’s Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly clean their house\, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. Another custom is the decoration of windows and doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets include that of good fortune or happiness\, wealth\, and longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes. For the northern regions of China\, dumplings are featured prominently in meals celebrating the festival. It often serves as the first meal of the year either at midnight or as breakfast of the first day. \nSource by Wikipedia \n
